Meet Janel

Janel Martir is a NYC-based professional birth doula specializing in prenatal and postnatal holistic health and wellness. Janel has attended over 250+ births in the US and abroad. As an advanced labor practitioner, she draws upon her deep knowledge of women’s health, clinical obstetrics, and yoga to support her clients in creating an empowering and mindful birthing experience.

Janel is dedicated to supporting and inclusively empowering birthing people - including single moms and women of color - through their incredible and powerful journeys into motherhood and parenthood.

Janel came into her work as a birth and postpartum doula after her transformative experience as a medical student and medical education researcher. In 2016, Janel completed global health work in Uganda as part of the medical team administering care in the maternity and postpartum wards of Mulago National Hospital. Her essay on global health won her international recognition from the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) in 2017. While traveling the globe, she gained insight into how birth culture varies across the world. She also witnessed first-hand the importance of providing access to quality health to ALL women and birthing persons regardless of socioeconomic background, race or tribe, and has written extensively on the need to advocate for fair access to maternity and newborn care. During her 4th year in medical school at the Robert Larner School of Medicine at the University of Vermont, Janel decided to dedicate her life to supporting women through the reproductive realities of pregnancy, birth and parenthood.

As COVID-19 emerged in 2020 as a global force changing the landscape of birth culture in NYC, Janel continued to attend births both virtually and in-person. Her priority continues to be providing evidence-based support, care and advocacy to her clients during such a tricky and challenging time. Janel relies on her expertise and experience within the hospital and medical system to help her clients navigate the changing policies of the labor and postpartum wards in New York.
